Among the many meaningful details at the base of the Betty Campbell statue is a sculpted image of St Mary’s Church, a landmark in Butetown that holds deep historical, cultural, and spiritual significance. Its inclusion reflects not only the importance of the church to the Tiger Bay community but also to Betty Campbell herself.
Christianity was a central part of Betty Campbell’s life. Her faith informed her values, guided her sense of justice, and inspired her commitment to service. She often spoke of the strength and comfort her beliefs gave her, especially during challenging times. Her Christian faith grounded her work as a teacher, a leader, and a role model, reminding her always to act with compassion, humility, and courage.
St Mary’s Church served as a cornerstone of the Butetown community. Located in the heart of Tiger Bay, it welcomed a diverse congregation from across the world - including families and seafarers from African countries, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Ireland, and beyond. In an area built on migration and global connections, St Mary’s provided spiritual guidance, social support, and a sense of belonging to all.
Importantly, St Mary’s was known for conducting interracial weddings at a time when such unions were often met with disapproval elsewhere. The church quietly modelled the same values that Betty later promoted: inclusion, acceptance, and the belief that love and humanity transcend race and background.
The presence of the church in the statue symbolises not just a building, but a way of living - rooted in faith, equality, and community. It connects Betty’s personal spiritual journey with the collective life of Butetown and honours the role that institutions like St Mary’s played in holding diverse communities together with dignity and respect.
Just as Betty Campbell worked tirelessly to uplift and unite those around her, St Mary’s Church stood - and still stands - as a symbol of togetherness, welcoming all who speak up, seek hope, faith, and a place to belong.

At the base of Betty Campbell’s statue in Cardiff stands the sculpted form of a ship - a deeply symbolic element that holds layers of meaning rooted in both personal loss and collective history.
The ship represents the waves of migration that shaped the community of Tiger Bay, where Betty Campbell was born and raised. Cardiff’s historic docks welcomed people from across the world - Africa, the Caribbean, the Indian subcontinent, Ireland, and beyond - creating one of Britain’s oldest multiethnic communities. These migrants arrived by sea, many finding work in the docks and industries that powered the city’s growth. The ship, therefore, stands as a tribute to these journeys, sacrifices, and contributions that formed the rich cultural tapestry of Tiger Bay.
But the ship also holds a deeply personal resonance. It honours the memory of Betty Campbell’s father, Simon Johnson, who died during the Second World War. Simon was a "greaser" - a crewman working deep in the ship’s engine rooms - aboard the British Liberty class merchant vessel Ocean Vanguard. On 13 September 1942, while sailing unescorted from South Africa, via South America, to New York, the Ocean Vanguard was stalked for 36 hours and then torpedoed by German U-boat 515, commanded by Werner Henke. Off the coast of South America, the ship was sunk, and Simon Johnson, along with eleven others, perished. He was just 38 years old.
This act of remembrance, embedded in the sculpture, weaves together Betty Campbell’s personal loss with the broader story of global conflict, migration, and community resilience. It reminds us that the legacies of war, empire, and migration are not abstract - they are lived through families like Betty’s, and they shaped the values that fuelled her life of service, education, and justice. Betty Campbell campaigned to fundraise for a plaque to be installed in the Butetown Community Centre as a mark of remembrance for all those merchant seamen who fought in WW2. The plaque is still up in the community centre and has the names of those involved inscribed.

At the base of the Betty Campbell statue in Cardiff lies an open bronze atlas - a powerful symbol of her passion for learning, her love of travel, and her belief in broadening horizons for every child.
As Wales’s first Black headteacher and a trailblazer in inclusive education, Betty Campbell believed that children should not only learn about the world from books, but also experience it beyond the classroom. For her, education wasn’t limited to local or national history - it was global. She wanted her pupils to understand how they were connected to people and places far beyond Butetown, and how their stories fitted into a wider human story.
Betty had a deep love of travel. She enjoyed going on holiday, exploring different cultures, and seeing the world - and she made sure her pupils could do the same. She organised school trips abroad so that children from her community, could experience life beyond Butetown. These journeys opened young eyes to new perspectives and possibilities, helping children imagine futures without limits.
The open atlas symbolises this spirit of exploration - both literal and intellectual. It represents Betty’s belief that knowledge of the wider world builds empathy, confidence, and curiosity. Through geography, history, and lived experience, she helped children understand their place in the world - and believe they belonged in it.
It also reflects her commitment to teaching global citizenship, Black history, and cultural understanding. The atlas is not just a book of maps - it is a gateway to connection, pride, and purpose. Just as she turned classrooms into spaces of discovery, the atlas reminds us that with the right support, children can journey far beyond what society expects - and become anything they dream to be.

At the base of the Betty Campbell statue in Cardiff rests a small bronze suitcase — a poignant symbol of a child’s journey during a time of war and uncertainty. It represents a significant chapter in Betty Campbell’s life: being evacuated from her home in Butetown during the Second World War.
Betty was just seven years old when she was sent away from her multicultural docklands community, along with her classmates from St Mary’s School. Like thousands of children across Britain, she carried a small suitcase, a gas mask, and a cardboard label — the only possessions allowed on a journey that was meant to keep children safe from the bombing of major cities.
She was evacuated with her close friend Betty Neal to Aberdare, a town in the South Wales Valleys — just 25 miles from Cardiff, but a world away from the life she had known. The train journey was filled with both excitement and fear. When she arrived, Betty and her friend were among the last to be chosen by host families. They were eventually taken in by a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Challenger, and their daughter, Hazel. On their first evening, sitting at the table for a meal, Betty and her friend were too overwhelmed to eat. Misunderstandings about culture and identity surfaced quickly: when the girls didn’t use their cutlery, their host assumed they didn’t know how — a small moment that revealed how different their lives and expectations had been.
Betty’s time in Aberdare was shaped by this sense of being different, and while she didn’t feel rejected, she was always aware that she and her friend were guests in someone else’s home, adjusting to unfamiliar routines. She missed her mother, who visited at weekends to plait her hair — a tradition the host family didn’t know how to continue.
In September 1942, Betty’s father, Simon Johnson, was killed when his ship, Ocean Vanguard, was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of South America. Devastated, Betty’s mother brought her back home to Butetown early.
The suitcase at the base of the statue carries all of this: the trauma of war, the courage of a young girl, the pain of loss, and the beginnings of a lifelong journey toward compassion, education, and justice. It represents the millions of children evacuated across the UK — but more personally, it represents Betty’s own strength, her ability to make sense of a complex world, and her deep empathy for those who feel out of place.
Later, as a teacher and headteacher, Betty drew from this early experience. She understood what it meant to feel different, to be uprooted, and to long for a sense of belonging. Her classrooms became places where every child — no matter their background — could feel valued, respected, and safe.
In a wider context, the suitcase also symbolises migration and movement — a shared story across generations in Butetown, where people from across the world arrived with suitcases of their own, full of hopes, memories, and uncertainty. Betty’s suitcase, however, stands still — forever cast in bronze — reminding us that from even the smallest journeys, the greatest legacies can be born.

At the base of the Betty Campbell statue in Cardiff, a young boy is shown carefully constructing a model of the iconic Coal Exchange building. This striking detail holds powerful symbolic meaning, connecting Cardiff’s industrial past with Betty Campbell’s lifelong commitment to education and aspiration.
The Coal Exchange, located in the heart of Cardiff Bay, was once one of the most important buildings in the world. It was here that the global price of coal was set — a symbol of Cardiff’s central role in powering the British Empire during the height of the coal trade. The wealth and international connections forged through this industry helped shape the city’s diverse and dynamic population, particularly in communities like Tiger Bay.
The boy building the Coal Exchange represents the next generation — a child of Tiger Bay — engaging with the past while constructing a vision for the future. His model is not only a tribute to the architectural and economic history of Cardiff, but also a metaphor for learning, growth, and ambition. It speaks to Betty Campbell’s belief in the power of education to transform lives, and her dedication to inspiring young people to see themselves as builders of their own futures.
This quiet moment of construction, captured in bronze, reflects the essence of Betty Campbell’s legacy: helping children take pride in where they come from, understand the histories that shaped them, and imagine the possibilities of what they can become.

At the base of the Betty Campbell statue in Cardiff, the open pages of a bronze book display lyrics from "Something Inside So Strong", the powerful anti-apartheid anthem by British singer-songwriter Labi Siffre. These words are not only a tribute to the global struggle for justice but also a personal reflection of Betty Campbell’s own strength, spirit, and legacy.
The song, written in response to apartheid and oppression, speaks of a quiet but unshakeable inner power - the kind Betty demonstrated throughout her life. As Wales’s first Black headteacher, she worked through structures of racism, prejudice, and low expectations to become a national figure in education and equality. The lyrics echo her belief in standing tall, speaking truth, and never giving up - values she instilled in the thousands of children she taught and inspired.
The symbolism of the open book represents both education and empowerment - tools Betty used to transform lives. She taught her pupils about civil rights, global history, and their own heritage, encouraging them to be proud of who they were and where they came from.
This connection to the song was made even more poignant at the statue’s unveiling, where Labi Siffre himself gave a recorded speech to honour Betty Campbell’s memory and the significance of her work. His message added a deeply personal and emotional dimension to the moment, recognising the shared values they both championed - resilience, dignity, and the power of the human spirit.
Betty Campbell’s love for music was also a part of her community life. She enjoyed participating in the Butetown choir, a group rooted in the vibrant multicultural heart of Cardiff. For her, music was a way to build community, express culture, and celebrate shared humanity - just as education and activism were.
Together, the song lyrics, the open book, and the presence of music all honour Betty’s unwavering belief: that no matter the barriers, something inside each of us is strong enough to rise, to speak out, and to change the world.

Beneath the canopy of the Betty Campbell statue in Cardiff, the engraved face of Nelson Mandela is quietly present - a powerful tribute to one of the most respected figures in the global fight for justice, freedom, and human dignity.
The image of Mandela reflects Betty Campbell’s deep admiration for his courage, leadership, and lifelong commitment to ending racial oppression. As a teacher and trailblazer, she used his story to inspire generations of children, showing them that standing up for what’s right - even in the face of immense hardship - can change the world.
This tribute is made even more meaningful by a remarkable moment in Betty Campbell’s own life: when Nelson Mandela visited Wales for the first time after his release from prison, he sought her out to meet. He had heard about her pioneering work in education and anti-racism and recognised her as a kindred spirit in the fight for justice. Their meeting was a testament to the impact she had made - not just locally, but on the world stage.
The engraving also symbolises the link between local and global struggles. While Betty’s work was rooted in the classrooms and communities of Cardiff, her vision reached far beyond. She taught her pupils about apartheid, Black history, and global civil rights, helping them understand that their voices mattered - and that they were part of a much bigger story.
Mandela’s face, etched beneath the protective canopy of the statue, is a lasting reminder that leaders like Betty Campbell and Nelson Mandela are connected by shared values: courage, compassion, and the unwavering belief in a better, fairer world.

Beside the bronze figures at the base of the Betty Campbell statue is a simple but powerful feature: two empty chairs. Unlike traditional statues that are meant to be observed from a distance, these chairs are an invitation to come closer, to sit, and to be part of the story.
The chairs symbolise inclusion, accessibility, and community. These were values at the heart of Betty Campbell’s life and legacy. As a teacher, she believed every child should have a place at the table. As a community leader, she made space for every voice to be heard. The empty chairs reflect this ethos. They are there for everyone, regardless of background, age, or experience.
Please be encouraged to sit in the chairs, take a moment, and experience the statue not just as a monument, but as a living space for reflection, learning, and connection. By taking a seat, you’ll place yourself among the scenes of storytelling, teaching, and community gathered at the base. It is a reminder that we all have a role to play in continuing Betty Campbell’s work.
Whether you are a child sitting beside your hero, a teacher remembering your purpose, or a visitor learning her story for the first time, the empty chairs are a chance to pause, belong, and be inspired.

“We were a good example to the rest of the world that you can live together regardless of where you come from, or the colour of your skin.”
This powerful quote from Betty Campbell is inscribed on her statue in Cardiff and captures the heart of her life’s work and the values she championed. It speaks to the unique and inclusive spirit of Tiger Bay - the diverse community in which she was born, raised, and spent her life - and to her unwavering belief in the power of unity through difference.
Tiger Bay, now known as Cardiff Bay, was one of the first truly multicultural communities in the UK. It brought together people from Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Asia, Ireland, and mainland Europe, drawn to the area by work on the docks and in the shipping industry. It was a place where people of all races, faiths, and backgrounds lived side by side, often in the face of poverty and discrimination. Despite the challenges, it was also a place of mutual respect, solidarity, and community.
Betty Campbell saw the richness in this diversity. She grew up surrounded by different languages, cultures, and traditions, and recognised from an early age the beauty and strength that came from people living together in harmony. As an educator, she worked tirelessly to reflect this multicultural reality in the classroom. She introduced Black history, taught about world cultures, and encouraged all children - no matter their race or background - to be proud of who they were.
This quote is not only a reflection of her pride in Tiger Bay, but also a statement of hope and example. At a time when racism and division still persist globally, Betty’s words remind us that peaceful, respectful coexistence is not only possible - it has already been lived. Her message challenges us to look beyond prejudice and fear and to build communities rooted in inclusion, understanding, and shared humanity.
Betty Campbell didn’t just talk about these values - she lived them, taught them, and passed them on. This quote, carved in stone, continues to speak to generations: a lasting call to action and a tribute to the power of community, compassion, and courage, that we must remember.

“If you’re determined to do something, you will do it. And I think my life has been full of determinations.” – Betty Campbell
For Betty Campbell
Born in Tiger Bay, never left,
I hear she was a force to be reckoned with.
Called herself a trailblazer, path curator,
constructed schoolbooks from scraps
to tell the full version of history.
Showed her children something true:
They’d always been here, rooted in the soil
through wars and riots, carnivals and industry.
That they stood powerful, worthy
of greatness, never out on their own
with Mrs Campbell fighting their corner.
When Betty was told she couldn’t, her dreams
out of reach for a Black girl from Butetown
who should never want too much,
never take space, never shake things up —
she only wanted harder.
A life of determinations, woman of firsts,
all the while people waited to watch her fail.
So she learnt to nod her head,
say the right things, butter them up
to beat them at their own game.
Listen close — I hear the streets
still call her name after dark,
her school stands, flourishing,
in testament to her story.
And If you kick away the patches
of loose gravel from pavements,
you’ll find lockets of her memories.
A mother, teacher, mentor,
wife, activist, advocator,
I’ll tell my future daughters about Betty
when I speak of bravery.
Her legacy goes on, immortalised
in clay and stone. Let them come
from far and wide, to see
how just one woman can touch
so many lives.

At the heart of Betty Campbell’s life’s work was a simple but radical belief: that every child deserved to know their history. In her school in Butetown, she insisted that young people should learn not only about kings, queens, and wars, but also about the lives, struggles, and triumphs of ordinary people - especially those whose voices were too often silenced in traditional accounts.
For Betty, history was not just about the past. It was about identity, belonging, and possibility. She wanted children from Cardiff’s diverse communities to see themselves reflected in the stories they studied - to understand that their families and cultures were part of the fabric of Britain’s history, not separate from it. She also wanted children from white British backgrounds to grow up with a fuller, truer picture of the world, one that celebrated connection, equality, and justice.
Her drive extended beyond the classroom. Betty nurtured and supported countless young people as they grew into adulthood, always reminding them of their worth and potential. She was a steady guide, offering encouragement in moments of doubt and challenging them to rise to their best selves. Many former pupils remember her as the teacher who saw something in them that they had not yet seen in themselves - and who never let them forget it.
By placing children’s histories at the centre of education, Betty Campbell reshaped what it meant to teach. She created a space where every child, regardless of background, could feel proud of who they were and confident in who they might become. Her legacy lives on in the generations she inspired, not only to remember their histories but also to carry forward the values of courage, compassion, and justice.

Cardiff’s historic docks welcomed people from across the world—Africa, the Caribbean, the Indian subcontinent, Ireland, and beyond—creating one of Britain’s oldest multiethnic communities. Known as Tiger Bay, this area became home to generations of families who arrived by sea, many of whom found work in the docks and the industries that powered the city’s growth. These journeys, sacrifices, and contributions helped to shape the rich cultural tapestry of Cardiff and left a lasting legacy of resilience and diversity.
This history is also bound up with personal stories of loss and remembrance. Betty Campbell’s father, Simon Johnson, was one of many merchant seamen whose lives were cut short during the Second World War. Johnson worked as a “greaser,” a crewman in the engine rooms of the British Liberty class merchant vessel Ocean Vanguard.
On 13 September 1942, while sailing unescorted from South Africa via South America to New York, the ship was stalked for 36 hours and torpedoed by German U-boat 515, commanded by Werner Henke. Off the coast of South America, the Ocean Vanguard was sunk. Simon Johnson, just 38 years old, perished alongside eleven others.
The memory of Tiger Bay’s merchant seamen continues to be honoured within the community. Betty Campbell herself campaigned for a plaque to be installed at the Butetown Community Centre in tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the war. The plaque remains there today, inscribed with their names, as a reminder of the bravery and contributions of a community whose history is inseparable from migration, conflict, and survival.

During the Second World War, thousands of children across Britain were evacuated from major cities to protect them from bombing raids. They travelled with little more than a small suitcase, a gas mask, and a cardboard label. Among them was seven-year-old Betty Campbell, sent away from her home in Butetown along with classmates from St Mary’s School.
Betty and her close friend, Betty Neal, were evacuated to Aberdare in the South Wales Valleys. Just 25 miles from Cardiff, the town felt like a different world compared to the multicultural docklands community they had known. The train journey brought a mix of fear and excitement, but once they arrived, both girls were among the last to be chosen by host families. Eventually, they were taken in by Mr. and Mrs. Challenger and their daughter, Hazel.
Life in Aberdare brought challenges of adjustment and belonging. On their first evening, the girls were too overwhelmed to eat at the dinner table, and when they didn’t use cutlery, their host mistakenly assumed they didn’t know how. Small moments like this revealed cultural differences and underscored how far from home they really were. Betty missed her mother deeply; every weekend, her mother would travel to Aberdare to plait her hair, a tradition unfamiliar to the host family.
In September 1942, tragedy struck. Betty’s father, Simon Johnson, was killed when his ship, Ocean Vanguard, was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of South America. Devastated, Betty’s mother brought her back to Butetown early, ending her evacuation.
This experience left an enduring mark. As a teacher and headteacher, Betty Campbell drew on her early sense of dislocation and loss. She knew what it meant to feel different, to long for belonging, and to navigate an unfamiliar world. Her classrooms became places of safety, compassion, and respect, where every child could feel valued no matter their background.
The story of Betty’s evacuation reflects not only her personal resilience but also the shared history of millions of children displaced during the war. It also resonates with the broader story of migration in Butetown, where generations arrived with suitcases of their own - carrying hopes, memories, and uncertainty. From Betty’s small wartime journey grew a lifelong commitment to justice, empathy, and education, leaving a legacy far greater than the suitcase she once carried.

Nelson Mandela remains one of the most respected figures in the global struggle for justice, freedom, and human dignity. His life’s work - fighting against apartheid in South Africa and dedicating himself to reconciliation and equality - made him a symbol of courage and perseverance across the world.
Betty Campbell held a deep admiration for Mandela’s leadership and resilience. As a teacher and pioneer, she often used his story to inspire her pupils, showing them that standing up for what is right, even in the face of immense hardship, can transform societies. For her, Mandela’s example was proof that ordinary people could change the course of history through determination and moral conviction.
This connection became personal when Nelson Mandela visited Wales for the first time after his release from prison. Hearing of Betty Campbell’s pioneering work in education and anti-racism, he sought her out to meet. Their encounter was a testament to the impact she had made - not only within her community in Cardiff but also on the world stage.
By teaching her pupils about apartheid, Black history, and global civil rights, Betty Campbell ensured that local struggles were never separated from global ones. She showed young people that their voices mattered, that they belonged to a much larger story of justice and equality, and that figures like Mandela were part of the same fight they were connected to.
Mandela’s legacy continues to remind us of the shared values that linked him with leaders like Betty Campbell: courage, compassion, and an unwavering belief in a better, fairer world.

St Mary’s Church in Butetown has long stood as a landmark of historical, cultural, and spiritual importance. Situated in the heart of Tiger Bay, it welcomed a diverse congregation that reflected the area’s global character - families and seafarers from Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Ireland, and beyond found a spiritual home there. In a community shaped by migration and seafaring, St Mary’s offered not only religious guidance but also social support, belonging, and solidarity.
Christian faith was central to Betty Campbell’s life. It shaped her values, strengthened her resolve in difficult times, and inspired her lifelong commitment to service. Compassion, humility, and courage - principles rooted in her faith - guided her as a teacher, leader, and role model within her community.
St Mary’s was also notable for its quiet but profound role in advancing social inclusion. At a time when interracial marriages were often frowned upon, the church opened its doors to couples of different backgrounds, embodying the values of love, acceptance, and equality. This spirit of inclusion mirrored the principles Betty Campbell later carried into her own work in education and community leadership.
The history of St Mary’s is thus inseparable from the wider story of Butetown. More than a church building, it represented a way of life grounded in faith, justice, and unity - values that helped sustain one of Britain’s most diverse communities and left an enduring mark on those who grew up within its reach.

Kindness and a gentle nature are powerful qualities in a leader, even if they aren't the loudest. Betty Campbell knew this well; her calm strength and compassion helped her to lead with wisdom and respect. Choosing the quiet, kind candidate shows that you value empathy and cooperation over just being loud. A leader who listens to everyone and treats them with respect can build a stronger, more supportive team where everyone feels valued. It's about looking beyond how someone appears on the outside and seeing the goodness they hold inside.

A leader who listens to everyone and treats them with respect can build a stronger, more supportive team where everyone feels valued. It's about looking beyond how someone appears on the outside and seeing the goodness they hold inside.

Tell the person teasing to stop and report it to a teacher.
Taking a stand for someone who is being treated unfairly takes courage, just like Betty Campbell did throughout her life. It shows that you won't let unkindness go unchallenged. By speaking up and reporting the bullying, you are not only helping that individual student but also making your school a safer place for everyone. It teaches others that it's not okay to tease or make fun of people for their differences, and that everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Your actions make you an ally, someone who stands up for what's right, even when it's difficult.
